This time we flew from Prestwick airport, which is quite a drive away (about 2 hours) south of Glasgow, especially for a 9:30 am Friday morning flight. Prestwick airport's new slogan is "pure dead brilliant", which makes you anticipate being attacked by Neds as you enter the airport. We didn't have any Swedish Kroner at this point, "don't worry" I told Morag, "there'll be a cash machine at the airport".
We arrived at Goteborg City airport, after being entertained by "Roger's stag party" crowd on the way over. Goteborg airport is absolutely in the middle of nowhere and I don't think they even had the power on, never mind having a cash machine. The airport bus leaves 30 mins after the RyanAir flight arrives and took us to the centre of Goteborg(with payment of some Euros), from there we took a tram to the hotel, kindly provided at a "very" discount rate by Morag's sister Fiona (thx Fi). Nice hotel, if in a seedy area, with great views of the harbour.
The excuse for coming here was that there was a half-marathon and Morag had booked in for it. The race started about 2pm, and it absolutely bucketed rain from late Friday night until about noon Saturday. So Morag was lucky with the weather. There were about 30,000 runners, so it was a staggered start. Morag's time was 2:09 which she was very pleased with, considering the crowds and that the course included running over a bridge high over the harbour (you can see the bridge in the photos).
The rest of our time in Goteborg was spent looking round the town, which is pleasant though not spectacular. Looks like a really nice place to live. There are a few parts of town preserved from centuries ago, and some very modern parts. It's mostly pretty well kept too.
Remember I said the hotel was in a bit of a seedy area, well I'm glad we didn't have a car there, because both Fri and Sat nights there was a guest car broken into (window smashed) and stuff knicked. Friday nights victims were a family from England that we chatted too over breakfast on Sat, at that time they didn't know their car had been done over. They were booked in for a stay at a house in the country, so not a good start to that holiday. And not what you expect to happen in a civilised place like Sweden!
Well we just had to visit here didn't we? Seeing as it's only a few hours on the train from Goteborg.
I guess you could say that Malmo itself is not the most exciting town, pleasant, but not exciting. There are some nice smaller towns nearby that we visited by bus or train, Lund was OK, Ystad was very pretty.
The last part of the trip was a return to Goteborg for one night before heading out to the "bustling" airport for our return to Edinburgh.
Here are some photos from the weekend. Click on any photo to see the full-size version in our "photobox" on-line gallery. The gallery will open in a new window, there you will see all the thumbnails, click on any of them to see a bigger version or you can see a "slide-show" which works pretty well.
