Great Britain.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE AGE.
Sir, — I was thrilled to see a photo, of that grand old ship Great Britain, the sight of which revived old memories of the seventies. I lived on board of the old ship from: 24th June, 1874, till 28th August, sailing from Liverpool with other members of our family under the care of our dear old mother. Captain Chapman had charge of the old ship, having succeeded Captain Gray, who mysteriously disappeared on the voyage previously from Melbourne homewards, the chief officer, Mr. Chapman, taking charge, and thereafter becoming captain.
I have a vivid recollection of the old lamp trimmer, who was quite an lnstltutlon on board, Maltese Joe .Rodgers, who, by virtue of his having shown wonderful heroism in the saving of lives from the wreck ot the Royal George, was. quite a celebrity. He. had received, among other tokens, a lovely gold locket studded with diamonds from our late beloved Queen Victoria, beautifully Inscribed.
From the same Joe Rodgers I look my first "iesson" In tobacco smoking — pigtail twist tobacco bought by the yard, made up In balls like a ball of string — real Virginian ! I also had reason to remember the bosun, Jones by name, a splendid officer with a voice like a fog horn, and who could give the boys a good "rope's endlng."
Gone are those old times, but It Is good to - Indulge in tlie. memories. I have derived a great amount of pleasure In the reading of the old ships of the past In the columns of "The Age." —
Yours, &c., JOHN CAMPBELL.

A PAINFUL CASE.
At the Footscray Police Court this morning, Horace Walpole, Customs House officer, summoned Mary Jane Campbell to be bound over to keep the peace, and also for assault, A cross summons for assault had been taken out by Mrs Campbell, wife of a well-known resident, Mr Roberts appeared for the latter ; and Mr Croker for Walpole. The evidence disclosed that on the evening of the 22nd March Walpole was sitting at the office of the Sugar Works, talking to Campbell, when Mrs Campbell went down, and after making use of some words took a walking stick up and attempted to strike Walpole, but failed. She then took up a brick and threw it. Walpole in defending himself caught hold of Mrs Campbell round the waist and threw her on the ground. She sustained serious injuries to the head. Mrs Campbell in her evidence said that when she went to the office Walpole made the remark, "If I was Campbell I would put you In a cart and take you to the Asylum." She did not attempt to use any stick. Her husband told her to clear out, and she had to call out "Murder" as he had a stick in his hand over her head. Her married life had not been a happy one. For the case of Mrs Campbell against Walpole, the husband was called, and said the tale his wife had told was nothing but a tissue of lies. Though he had to give evidence against his wife It was very painful for him to do so. The presiding magistrates suggested that a settlement might become to between the parties, and they retired for the purpose of effecting one, but could not do so. After a consultation between the magistrates, it was decided to dismiss the case of Mrs Campbell against Walpole, and also to dismiss the Information sought to bind her over to keep the peace. For the assault upon Walpole she was fined L1 with 2s 6d costs, The cases caused a considerable interest in the district, and lasted the whole morning.
