The Age (Melbourne, Vic. : 1854 - 1954) - Sat 6 Oct 1934 - Page 7 - Great Britain. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/205876005 Great Britain. TO THE EDITOR OF THE AGE. Sir, — I was thrilled to see a photo, of that grand old ship Great Britain, the sight of which revived old memories of the seventies. I lived on board of the old ship from: 24th June, 1874, till 28th August, sailing from Liverpool with other members of our family under the care of our dear old mother. Captain Chapman had charge of the old ship, having succeeded Captain Gray, who mysteriously disappeared on the voyage previously from Melbourne homewards, the chief officer, Mr. Chapman, taking charge, and thereafter becoming captain. I have a vivid recollection of the old lamp trimmer, who was quite an lnstltutlon on board, Maltese Joe .Rodgers, who, by virtue of his having shown wonderful heroism in the saving of lives from the wreck ot the Royal George, was. quite a celebrity. He. had received, among other tokens, a lovely gold locket studded with diamonds from our late beloved Queen Victoria, beautifully Inscribed. From the same Joe Rodgers I look my first "iesson" In tobacco smoking — pigtail twist tobacco bought by the yard, made up In balls like a ball of string — real Virginian ! I also had reason to remember the bosun, Jones by name, a splendid officer with a voice like a fog horn, and who could give the boys a good "rope's endlng." Gone are those old times, but It Is good to - Indulge in tlie. memories. I have derived a great amount of pleasure In the reading of the old ships of the past In the columns of "The Age." — Yours, &c., JOHN CAMPBELL. Yarragon.
